Production Schedule

We will be heading up to London on the weekend.
We will get the train to charring cross to then film around that area, we will then walk to across the bridge to south bank where we will continue filming, we will spend most of our day there films up and down along south bank.
When we get back to school we will do the lip sync videos in different locations with each member.

Why would Katy Perry chose to do a lyric video before releasing the official video?

Katy Perrys' new song Unconditional was released online as a lyric video, before the release of the video it's self. The lyric video consists of a male and a female, the female being the one singing throughout the song. As she says the words the lyrics pass through the screen from her to him.

I think Katy Perry has done this as she wants to focus more on the songs meaning then the video itself. She is trying to rebrand herself as a more serious artist. She has just released Roar, a very pop and playful song. Roar, going to number one means that Katy Perry is back in the game after being away for sometime. This being good for herself and her new album, Prism. After the release of Roar, she can now come out with a song that isn't as pop and is stripped down bare. Ricard Dyers' star theory of 'Pop Stars' and 'Pop Performers' Katy Perry contradicts this theory as she doesn't appear in the video at all. However, fans will still watch these types of videos as Katy Perry is such a big star that she doesn't need to be in the video. She does another video similar to this for her Roar video. In that lyric video it is a group chat on Whatsapp and her and friend are texting the lyrics to each other. This is another video that she does not appear in, you are led to believe it is her texting. Which in some cases puts her on the same level as her fans, as many of them may use Whatsapp on a daily basis. Additionally, the fact that she is talking to her friends and typing out the lyric to songs could also put her on the same level as her fans, as her fandom would most likely do the same thing.

Videos I've come across that i like

I like this Lyric video by Katy Perry. It's nice to have some kind of visual part to the video as well as the lyrics. Reminds me of Justin Timberlakes lyric video for suite and tie. This video was shot and directed by a team of youths who won a competitions. i love how they have made this video. Although they have had help making it, it still looks pretty good and they've used a school for the setting. i like this band and again this is a video that could have been very easily made. Set in a house and having party. Looks a lot of fun to be in and make.

Making a Trailer

We decided to make a trailer, using a bundle of other trailers and picking parts out of each trailer to create our own. We had to come up with a concept for the trailer, mine was Disaster. We used Premier Pro to edit and cut all the parts.

One direction - Little Things

The audience for this video is really for the fans to see how serious they are about their music. Richard Dyer would call this a performance video as it shows the boys in the studio working hard. Also the use of black and white shoes the serious nature of the video, much like the Use Somebody video, when they are working the video is in black and white, then when they are having down time it is in colour. They are trying to represent themselves in a more serious light as most of their videos are them making jokes and having fun, this contrasts what they usually seen as. The video also uses the star image theory, the video is consumed with close up of all of them, whether they are singing into the camera or working on the music. The boys made their fame off of X factor, although they did not win the show, only coming 3rd, they are now the worlds biggest boyband and have the biggest fan base. They have had hits all around the world and adored by most young teenagers. Girls either want to date them and boys want to be them.

Kings of Leon - use somebody

The audience of the video lets you get to know the band. Fans get a look into the band life and the chill out time for the band. Although the lyrics are sad the video takes away from that and gives the audience a chance to develop a personal relationship with the band. The narrative of the video tells the story of the life through work and outside of it, the work life and the down time. The kings of Leon have been around since 2003 but didnt really have a following the UK until they brought out Sex is on fire. They then got a big following from USA and The UK. Since then they have gone on to win many awards. The genre of the music is rock, with the band on tour. The fact that when they are working the video is in black and white and when they are having down time the video is in colour some the pressures of being in a band. There are lots of close up shots of the lead singer which lets the audience connect with him and build the personal relationship. Fast paced editing keeps the fan engaged in the video. The representation of the video is to let a new kind of fan base come for the kings of Leon, after the smash hit sex is on fire, they needed a song where the fans could really come in to contact with how they really are. They get to build that personal relationship.

James Arthur - You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You

 The Audience for this from the video is really everyone. He uses a range of groups from the british society, old and young. He hasn't really have an audience to aim at, its more about of everyone uniting to his music. The narrative of the video is every kind of person in UK coming together to his music. Richard Dyer talks about a performance artist. This video has an element of performance. James Arthur came from the X Factor in the time between his christmas release to now he has become what Richard Dyer classes as a 'Pop Star' he has now been reconstructed for his upcoming album. His genre is quite mixed, the music is of a Regge/Rock kind, which could be classed as Ska. The audience of his video is everyone so is genre is quite broad too. His representation for the video is being the people person, everyone units to his music. The correlation between the lyrics and the music video is that the people who are coming to see him love him. So instead of the steriotypical 'Girl' to love him he talks of the country, as this party is like a microcosm of the rest of the UK, so he's now somebody because they love his music.  Finally, he uses a lot of close ups, and close ups of the instruments to show the performance element of the video and a lot of group shots of people in the community. The Union Jack represents that the people are from England, the video seem very patriarchal.

Audiences -

The audience of this type of R&B video is most probably aimed at male, they may be able to identify with the situation of being cheated on by a female. When the song came out fans took to fan sites talking about being in the same situation and seeking help.

Fans of both artists would be excited to see the pair who are on the same record label teaming up. Fans get to see them in what looks like their home and going through the issues of what us 'normal' people would go through. Fans would also be excited to see that Usher and R Kelly are close friends, as they refer to each other as 'Ush', 'dog', and 'Kells'. There is also the opportunity for fans to develop a personal relationship with the artists as they can identify with the kind of lifestyle they have, as they may want to aspire to have that kind of lifestyle.

Woman may also identify with the video as they could identify with the female in the video or being a 'potential wife' to someone as R Kelly refers to throughout the song. Woman could also identify with the video as they may be in the same situation but with a female companion instead of the male representatives.

Narrative -

They start off talking off on the phone about their individual projects; it then progresses onto a phone conversation with the two of them. They discuss a girl that they are both seeing and come to the conclusion that they are seeing the same girl. They then conjure up a plan to catch out the girl, when the plan comes to life they find out that they have actually been seeing two twins that do everything together.

Institutions-

The collaboration is really good for the record label as fans from both artists come together which then makes the record sell a lot more. It also forms alliances with both fandoms who will then demand more collaborations with the artists. It is also a good way for both artists to promote what they’re doing. R Kelly promotes his Double Up tour and Usher his fragrance launch.

Genre -

The lyrics of the song contribute to the genre of the music video using African American slang such 'Homie' 'Word' and 'Yo'. They also have the typical R&B conventions such as the fast cars, the massive house and all the designer clothes.

Representation -

For a R&B song this has a not typical theme of the women cheating on the men. The video reveals them finding this out. Typically R&B songs are about women in a derogatory way and making money, not that the women have been cheating on them. This is seen shameful to them. Although, other parts of the video show the typical conventions of a R&B video.

Analysis -

There are a range of different shots throughout the video. The most common being the split screen, showing both artists going about their lives. They both wear similar clothing which could portray their friendship but it can also portray the typical conventions of a R&B video as they have the sunglasses and the baggy clothes.

We were set a challenge to do a spoof of The Verve- Bitter Sweet Symphony. We took videos throughout the process. We used Flipcams to film this.
The whole thing went really well. Our media technicians is going to edit the footage and we should see it soon.

Simon Firth - 3 Types of Music Video

Conceptual: Demi Levato - Heartattack

Firth had three theories when it came to music videos. These being Conceptual, Narattive and Performace.

"Conceptual videos do not tell a story in linear fashion, but rather create a mood, a feeling to evoked in the experience of viewing" (Firth 1988) Firth is trying to say that these types of videos don't follow the actual songs lyrics but instead make you feel a certain way.

Narrative: Ellie Golding ft Calvin Harris - I Need You Love
Firth believed that a Narrative videos follow some kind of story of which follows the meaning to the song.

Performance: Abel Miller - Lego House
Firth believed those videos of stars in a studio or performing in a concert were classed as performace videos. Showing that the artist is serious about what he/shes' music is about.

Laura Muley's Theory

She believed that filmmakers are predominantly male so all videos were made for the 'male gaze' only for the male pleasure.They use women only for display. They objectify women.

We looked at Robin Thicke - Blurred lines, the unrated and the clean version. in both they objectify women.
Robin Thicke tends to objectify women in most of his videos. 50 Cent consistently uses the theory of the 'male gaze in his videos.

Richard Dyer believed that pop stars and pop performers were two very different things.
Pop Stars are about brand awareness. They are constructed, artificial even if they are represented at 'real' people.
Pop stars usually have a advantage over film stars and they are constantly in the media to highlight their USB.
 In a usual Pop star video you see the star every 10 seconds.

Andrew Goodwin had 5 different theories which we're Genre, Sound & Vision, Notion of looking, star image and intertextuality.
Goodwin thought that Genre videos represent stereotypes and conventions. For example Little Mix dancing in their video.
